Joy Blair does most of her singing and songwriting from her home in Northeast Tennessee. She is deeply inspired by early and classic country music, soulful songwriting, American roots music, and the Appalachian Mountain region she calls home. Her honest and uniquely crafted lyrics weave rural imagery with themes of love, family, loss, and life in emotive and compelling songwriting.
As a solo musician, Joy has performed for audiences in Connecticut, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia, and would love to come to you, wherever you are!
Joy grew up in Camp Creek, a rural community on the south side of Greene County, Tennessee. She was captivated by music at an early age and spent most of her childhood listening to and singing along with the golden oldies, church music, The Beatles, and Alison Krauss. She didn’t pick up an instrument until the age of 14, when she began learning guitar. She began songwriting almost immediately, and performed her original material at local coffee shops and the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville before graduating high school. After studying classical voice at Austin Peay State University for 3.5 years, Joy transferred to East Tennessee State University to focus on Appalachian traditional music.
As a student of East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music program, she performed with Old Time and Bluegrass bands at The Down Home, in Johnson City, Tennessee, The Paramount Theatre in Bristol, Tennessee, The Pickin' Porch in Bristol, TN/VA, and other venues from Johnson City to Atlanta, Georgia.
Since graduating from ETSU in May 2014, Joy has delved even deeper into songwriting and roots music. She has performed at regional favorite venues such as the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol, VA; The Down Home in Johnson City, TN; 3 years at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in Bristol TN/VA; and 3 years at Home Craft Days in Big Stone Gap, VA.
In 2018, Joy released her first solo album, Black Coffee, the title song of which has become the most requested at her live shows.
